History of Brisbane
The Turrbal and Yugerra people were the indigenous tribes that lived in what became Brisbane, before the British arrived. Matthew Flinders, the man to first circumnavigate Australia, left Port Jackson in 1799 to explore Moreton Bay.
In 1823, Sydney’s free settlers petitioned New South Wales Governor, Thomas Brisbane, to send Sydney’s worst convicts away to build a new penal colony, which was named after Governor Brisbane. Due to the rich resources in the area and being suitable land for farming, fishing and other occupations, the penal colony became a free colony open to British settlement in 1838.
Brisbane has a rich history, experiencing multiple floods, hosted US soldiers during WW2, as well as hosting the 1982 Commonwealth Games, World Expo 88 and the G20 Summit in 2014.
Until 1964, council regulations restricted building construction to 40 metres. Since then, multiple skyscrapers and large scale buildings have been erected, though a number of older buildings remain such as The Treasury Casino, Newstead House, the National Australia Bank Building and the City Council building to name a few.
Brisbane is also home to a wide range of shopping precincts and businesses, such as the Queen Street Mall and the Brisbane Arcade.
Brisbane’s unique mix of multiple storey high-rises and old buildings full of rich history are well covered by Surepaint’s range of services, who can handle any property or project.
