History of Clontarf
Clontarf is on the Southernmost part of the Redcliffe peninsula, and is also the site where Kedron Brook spills out into Moreton Bay. The suburb is located approximately 29kms North-East of Brisbane’s CBD.
John Oxley, one of Australia’s renowned explorers, was tasked in 1823 with finding a suitable location to establish a penal colony in Queensland, which was going to be the first British settlement in the state.
His first choice was the Redcliffe Peninsula. Not long after construction had begun, the peninsula was abandoned for Brisbane instead in 1825 has conditions deteriorated.
The mosquitoes became a demoralising force, and food and water sources became scarce. Furthermore, the Indigenous NingyNingy people began to resist colonisation efforts, and so Brisbane was chosen instead.
Today, Clontarf is home to most of the local area’s industry. Across the bay, the Houghton Highway and Ted Smout Memorial Bridge have replaced the old Hornibrook bridge to connect the peninsula to the mainland.
