History of Enoggera
Enoggera is a suburb 6kms North-West of the CBD in Brisbane. The Turrbal people performed many songs and dances there, and named the place youara-ngarea, which means ‘sing-play’.
The Government Lands Office originally wrote the area as Euogerra, to shorten the Turrbal name for the area, but a typo meant that the suburb was called Enoggera instead. In 1845, John Brennan bought six hectares of land for farming. In 1851, Thomas Hayes bought thirty-three acres of land. Enoggera became known for its orchards and vineyards.
The track North to Gympie meant ran through the area, and during the Gympie Gold Rush in the 1860s, a lot of traffic moved through the area, and this encouraged development in Enoggera. A school was opened in 1871, and Enoggera station was opened later in 1899.
Enoggera was its own shire, starting from 1887 until Brisbane City Council amalgamated it in 1925, as well as a number of other suburbs in Brisbane’s North. The suburb is home to a few heritage listed properties, notably Killarney and the Enoggera Memorial Hall.
Enoggera is also home to a military base of the Australian Army, Gallipoli Barracks, which is used for training new recruits amongst other duties. Gallipoli Barracks is one of the largest and oldest bases in Australia.
