History of Highgate Hill

Highgate Hill is an inner city suburb 2kms South of the Brisbane CBD. The area is known for its many hills and views of the Brisbane River.

Before the arrival of British settlers and convicts, the area of Highgate Hill was a hunting ground for the Indigenous Jagera and Turrbul peoples, but as Brisbane was established and opened up for free settlement in 1838, they were forced off the land.

The area became known for convict working gangs felling trees for timber to help erect the new colony. Free settler George Wilson had a farm built for his family in Bellevue Street, and he is attributed with naming the suburb Highgate Hill.

After WW2, development of the area increased, and Dornoch Terrace became the site of Brisbane’s first apartment block. While a number of original houses were demolished to make way for new developments, a number of heritage listed properties remain.

Surepaint people are amazing and love the way they work so well. I had called them for driveway resealing. The cleaned the driveway using a leaf blower and repaired the path before applying the sealer. There were 2-3 people working on the driveway and knew each task really well.
