History of Kelvin Grove

Kelvin Grove is 3kms North of Brisbane, and is situated in a hilly area home to many residential properties, as well as commercial businesses and QUT’s Kelvin Grove campus.

Kelvin Grove used to be part of a separate town, Ithaca, before Brisbane City Council grew and amalgamated it and other Ithaca suburbs into itself in 1925. Before British settlement began, the area was home to the Turrbal and Ningy Ningy Indigenous peoples.

Many homes were built in Kelvin Grove, and the area provides some great view of Brisbane’s North. In 1914 the Gona Barracks was built as a training ground for Army reserves. The barracks was closed in 1998 and much of its space was cleared for the Kelvin Grove Urban Village, though some Gona Barracks buildings remain and are heritage listed.

The Kelvin Grove Urban Village is not only home to some of QUT’s lecturing, studying, workshop and educational spaces, but also to a number of commercial businesses and residential apartments.

The buildings in Kelvin Grove a mix of old and recent houses to residential strata and student accommodation, as well as businesses in the Urban Village and along main thoroughfares such as Kelvin Grove Road. Some of the streets are lined with trees and the area does include some parks and green spaces for recreation.

Surepaint people are amazing and love the way they work so well. I had called them for driveway resealing. The cleaned the driveway using a leaf blower and repaired the path before applying the sealer. There were 2-3 people working on the driveway and knew each task really well.
