History of Newmarket
Newmarket is a Suburb North of Brisbane, about 5kms North-West from the CBD. Breakfast Creek marks the Southerb border of the suburb, and Enoggera road runs Northwards through the area.
Originally, Newmarket was known as Three Mile Scrub, due to its distance from Brisbane’s CBD. The area became known for its cattle yards and livestock, and when the markets in the city couldn’t meet their needs, the farmers and merchants built a new market in the area in 1875, hence the name.
In 1877, the Newmarket Hotel was opened and a post office in 1888. A train line was established in the area and began operations in 1889, and Newmarket station was built soon after.
Residential growth then followed, leading to a number of businesses including a blacksmith being in the area, as well as a school which was built in 1904. Trams arrived a little later to Newmarket than they did elsewhere in 1926, and lasted until 1969 when all of Brisbane’s trams were shut down.
Newmarket is known for its old Queenslander style homes and has seen a lot of upscale development in recent years. If you’re after a painter in Newmarket that will do your property justice, get in touch with Surepaint.
