History of Newstead

Newstead is an inner-city suburb located along 3kms North of the CBD and rests on the banks of the Brisbane River.

During British colonisation of the Brisbane area, Newstead was a hive of industry. Timber yards, asbestos works and woolstores were kept busy as the burgeoning city. Along the river, wharves were a source of trade and transport for goods and fresh materials.

Newstead is also the site of Brisbane’s oldest surviving residential property, Newstead House, built in 1846.
