History of Nundah
Nundah is 8kms North-East of the Brisbane CBD, and before British settlement was land ancestral to the Turrbal people. Nundah translates to ‘chain of watering holes’, and was so named due to the high number of natural water sources in the surrounding area.
When British settlement arrived and began establishing Brisbane in 1825, Nundah wouldn’t be touched until 1838 by German Lutheran missionaries, who named the area Zion. Officially, Nundah was first known as German Station because of the German missionaries who established a mission there, though it would be closed in 1846.
Nundah was mostly known for its farmland until the 1880s, when a renewed interest in the area led to a number of land sales. A train station was built in 1882, and in 1888 the suburb was officially renamed Nundah.
A number of commercial properties were established, though they began to decline in the 1970s. In 2008 Brisbane City Council began a renewal project which has seen a number of cafes, commercial businesses and art installations move into the area, and house prices have increased greatly.
