History of Spring Hill

Technically, Spring Hill is located 2kms North of Brisbane’s CBD, but many areas of it can be considered an extension of the CBD due to its close proximity and high number of business offices and apartments.

Spring Hill was once occupied by the Jagera and Turrbal peoples before the British arrived, and the steep hills the suburb is known for have not changed much over time. Spring Hill earnt its name from the hilly terrain and being the creek which became the first fresh water supply the British used.

As one of Brisbane’s oldest suburbs, many houses and buildings were already decades old when the area was surveyed in the 1870s. As Brisbane’s population grew, many of these old buildings were destroyed to make way for new apartments and office spaces during the 20th century.

Despite this urbanisation, a number of Heritage listed properties survive in the area, such as the Cliveden Mansions, William Grigor’s House, Lister House and Mountview House, which can still be seen today.
