History of West End

Before the British began establishing Brisbane as a penal colony, the Indigenous Jagera and Turrbal peoples used the area as a camping and hunting ground, which they called Kurilpa. Kurilpa means ‘place of mice’, and was so named for the bush rats and fawn-footed melomys which they hunted there.

When the British arrived, they named the area West End as the settlers found it reminded them of West End in London. The fertile soil became pristine farmland for orchards and farms. The area was also home to some industry such as sawmills and steam joineries.

West End have undergone a number of gentrification projects and upscale development to turn the suburb into one of Brisbane’s more trendy area. A number of cafes, markets, restaurants and bars have been built in the area, as well as modern residential strata and apartment buildings interspersed throughout the older houses.
