History Of Hendra

Hendra is a Brisbane suburb located 6kms North-East of Brisbane’s CBD. The area is known for its Jacaranda and Royal Poinciana Trees on the streets. Hendra wasn’t always like this however.

Hendra was originally farmland, and shares a lot of history with Nundah. Kedron Brook runs across the suburb’s Northern border, and the fresh water supplies made the area good farmland. The area was known for its fruit farms producing citrus, grapes and pineapples. The area was also home to a number of dairy farms.

An unfortunate part of the suburb’s history involves the Hendra Virus, which takes its name from the suburb. While Hendra lies right next to the Doomben and Eagle Farm Racecourses to the South, the affected stables where the Hendra virus was first detected in 1994 was on Williams Avenue, though no trace of the stables remain and the area is now home to residential homes.

Today, Hendra is a trendy suburb home to a number of restaurants, pubs, cafes and eateries. A number of smaller shopping areas are on offer as well. Beyond Kedron Brook, there are also several parks, bikeways and open areas for people to enjoy the fresh air.
