History Of Kedron

Kedron is a suburb in Brisbane’s North, about 7kms from the CBD. Its the traditional land of the Turrbal Indigenous people, and the suburb is named after Kedron Brook, a creek that flows along the suburb’s Southern border.

The creek was named by German Lutheran Missionaries who established a mission nearby in Nundah, though at the time were given a large amount of land that included modern day Kedron.

Kedron saw first British settlement in 1856, and land went on sale a year later. A number of free settlers and tradesmen came to the area, and Queensland’s first judge, Alfred Lutwyche, purchased 50 acres to establish a home for himself in Kedron. The property remains today and is heritage listed.

The Gympie Gold Rush saw a burst of business in the area as Gympie Road travels straight through Kedron and businesses wanted to meet the increasing demand of those traveling North to try their luck.
