History Of Keperra

Ascot is a Brisbane suburb located roughly 7kms North-East of the CBD. Before the British arrived and European settlement began, the area was known as Yowogerra to the Turrbal people that lived there.

The colony of Brisbane was established in 1825, and by the 1830s Ascot was being cleared by working gangs of convicts, and roads were also built in this time. In the 1840s free settlers moved into Ascot, and in 1855 James Sutherland bought a large portion of land and built Windermere, a heritage listed property that still stands to this day.

In 1863 the Eagle Farm Racecourse was built, and horse racing was one of Brisbane’s first popular sports. A number of stables were in the area until the 1920s. During WWII, American General Douglas MacArthur and Central Bureau had buildings in the area where they decoded Japanese intelligence.

The suburb, as one of Brisbane’s oldest properties, as a number of heritage listed homes and is renowned for its beautiful Queenslanders, picturesque tree lined streets, racing carnivals and shopping areas.
