History Of New Farm

New Farm was originally known as Binkinba by the Turrbal people, which means place of the land tortoises. The suburb sits along the Brisbane River and is 2kms East of the Brisbane CBD.

Patrick Logan built a farm in the area in 1827, and the suburb derived its name from the many farms that were established along the nourishing soil. The area was also the site of convict working gangs and became rich with industry and business over the years, with many wealthy merchants and lawyers establishing themselves in the area.

New Farm is also the site of a large recreation area, New Farm Park, and the Powerhouse, a theatre and performance space built in the remains of a former power station.

As one of Brisbane’s oldest suburbs, New Farm is home to many Queenslander style buildings and a number of heritage listings. Over recent years, the area has undergone gentrification, with many modern residential buildings, restaurants and businesses establishing themselves along the tree-lined streets.
