History of Sumner

Bowen Hills is a Brisbane inner city suburb situated 3kms North-East of Brisbane’s CBD. Named after a Governor of Queensland, Sir George Ferguson Bowen, the suburb has a rich history and includes a number of heritage listed sites such as Bowen Park, Cintra House and the Old Museum.

It is home to the RNA Showgrounds, which hosts the Royal Queensland Show, more commonly known as the Ekka. The Ekka is Queensland’s largest event, attracting over 400,000 people every year.

Before colonial settlement, the area was home to the Indigenous Chepara people. They named the place ‘Barrambin’, which means ‘windy place’. Where the showgrounds now stand was formerly an important location for initiation ceremonies.

Bowen Hills first post office opened in 1878, and a train station followed in 1882 as the suburb began to grow. In recent years, a number of new residential complexes were built to provide housing for Brisbane’s growing population, as well as retail outlets.

The suburb is a mix of old and new architecture, and has a mix of residential properties and commercial and public spaces such as its retail outlets, the Showgrounds, and the Royal Women’s Brisbane hospital.
