History of Kangaroo Point

Kangaroo Point is a suburb steeped in history that has undergone a lot of recent development. It offers residents plenty to do and see with its prime position along the Brisbane River, and the famous Kangaroo Point Cliffs offering panoramic views of Brisbane.

Originally occupied by the Turrbal people, the area was a jungle containing mangrove trees and tall grass above the cliffs, according to explorer John Oxley’s description. In 1825 convict settlement began, and the area was opened up for free settlers in 1843. The first house was built a year later by James Warner.

The area became a hive of industry, including shipwrights and a quarry that mined the cliffs for stones to use in constructing the booming city. It was also the sight of the Queensland Navy’s main ammunition and supply stores, until federation in 1901 when it became a base for the Royal Australian Navy.

There are a number of heritage listed properties in Kangaroo Point, including the old Navy stores, Lamb House, Sunnyside and St Mary’s Anglican Church to name a few. It is also the sight of modern apartments and body corporate managed residential properties.
